Indian railways which comprise the chief mode of organized transportation system is the nation’s single largest undertaking with a route length of over 63 thousand kilometers spread over 6853 railway stations. Making a small beginning in April 1853 when the first ever railway train in India commenced its journey from Mumbai to thane, a stretch of only 34 kilometers, Indian railways emerged to be Asia’s largest and the world’s second largest railway system under a single management.
As on march 31, 2011 the Indian railway had a vast network of 7083 stations spread over a route length of 64024 kilometers.
As on march 31, 2011 about 23 percent of the route kilometer, 34 percent of running track kilometer and 34 percent of total track kilometer is electrified, this is the second biggest electrified system in the system, the first being commonwealth of Independent states.
The Indian railway system is now divided into 17 zones. Each zone is headed by a general manager, who is responsible for the railway board for all the zonal affairs such as operation and maintenance of zonal railways and the financial matters pertaining there to.
Candidates should have requisite Educational qualifications (as indicated in the vacancy table) from recognized Board/University /Institute, including degrees obtained through non formal/distance education, provided he/she has completed 12 years of schooling through an Examination conducted by a Board/University OR has passed an entrance test conducted by the University AND is not below 18 years of age on 1st July of the year of admission to the course AND the degree so obtained is of 3 years duration as on the date of submission of the ONLINE application for this Centralized Employment Notice. Those awaiting results of the final examination need NOT apply.
- The lower and upper age limit indicated for a particular post(s) in the vacancy table will be reckoned as on 01.01.2016. The upper age limit is relaxable as under, subject to submission of requisite certificates:
- By 5 years for SC/ST candidates.
- By 3 years for OBC candidates. 2.03 No age relaxation is allowed to SC/ST/OBC candidates applying against unreserved vacancies.
- For Ex-Servicemen, up to the extent of service rendered in Defence, plus 3 years, provided they have put in more than 6 months service after attestation.
- By 5 years for candidates who have ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from 01.01.1980 to 31.12.1989.
- By 10 years for UR Persons with Disabilities (PWD), 13 years for OBC Persons with Disabilities and 15 years for SC&ST Persons with Disabilities (PWD).
- Upper age limit in case of widows, divorced women and women judicially separated from husband but not remarried shall be 35 years for Unreserved, 38 years for OBC and 40 years for SC/ST candidates.
- For serving Group “C” and erstwhile Group ‘D’ Railway Staff, Casual Labour and Substitutes, the upper age limit will be up to 40 years for Unreserved candidates, 45 years for SC/ST candidates and 43 years for OBC candidates, provided they have put in a minimum of 3 years service (continuous or in broken spells). For those working in Quasi-Administrative offices of the Railway organization such as Railway Canteens, Co-operative Societies and institutes, the relaxation in upper age limit will be up to the length of service rendered, subject to a maximum of 5 years.
Although there is no uniform or set pattern as far as the number of questions to be asked in different test papers is concerned but one thing is definite, i.e., coverage under each test paper. After carefully analyzing the question papers of several RRB examinations we come to the conclusion that there is a striking similarity in the syllabi and the standard of questions. Therefore, we may define the model syllabus for the exam broadly although not precisely and accurately. Ans, we are attempting to present a model syllabus for all the four test papers. Here it should be noted that the syllabus for the written examination will be generally in conformity with the educational standard prescribed for the post. For technical categories, the examination will be conducted in the allied branch/ branches of the concerned discipline of the appropriate standard. Written examination will be dispensed with if the number of eligible candidates is less than six times the number of vacancies at the discretion of Railway Recruitment Board.
Syllabus (non technical):
This part of question paper gauges whether the candidates are up to date with surrounding and includes the following:

- Awards and Honors
- Science – Inventions and Discoveries
- Important Days
- International and National Organizations
Arithmetic Ability: This part of exam are usually checks the quantitative and mathematical skills of the candidates and following are the topics from which the questions are asked:
- Number System
- HCF, LCM
- Decimal Fractions
- Ratio and Proportions
- Unitary Method
- Time and Distance
- Time and Work
- Profit and Loss
- Simple and Compound Interest
- Menstruation (2D and 3D)
- Data Interpretation
This is generally the questions that include the knowledge of the candidates about the profession and some technical questions which may be tricky.
Test of Reasoning/Mental Ability/Aptitude:
This part usually tries to test the reasoning abilities and Gauges aptitude of the person. It includes the following:
